Trupiano’s Italian Restaurant
Trupiano’s is located in a large shopping center at the intersection of College Boulevard and Mission (Highway 76). The restaurant is owned by Salvatore Trupiano, fondly called Tore by his loyal clientele. Tore has been in the restaurant business all of his life. Inspired by family recipes originating in Sicily, Tore’s parents opened their first restaurant in Chicago 36 years ago. As you know success breeds success and over the years, the Trupiano family has owned and operated 17 restaurants. Tore’s father would open a restaurant and sell it for a profit and then go on to the next one. They finally settled in San Diego and now Tore and two siblings carry on the family tradition. They own three restaurants in the County. The Oceanside restaurant has been in operation for 16 years. The atmosphere is typical of the small Italian restaurants throughout California. Small and cozy. Soft colors on the walls and when the candles on the table were lit, it created a comfortable atmosphere. The wait person was attentive and friendly, just what you would expect from a family owned restaurant that prides itself in making you feel at home. After considering various pizzas, we selected “The Siciliana”. A pizza comprised of Roma tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, Italian sausage, ham, salami, Parmesan cheese, oregano and basil. While waiting for the pizza to arrive we sampled their homemade soups. Homemade soup has always been a personal favorite and we were not disappointed. If you are lucky the soup of the day will be the “Chicken Tortellini”. Plump stuffed Tortellini pasta combined with tasty chicken, combined with the proper seasonings, it was perfect. We also sampled the Clam Chowder. Again we were delighted by this flavorful soup, light and creamy and full of tasty pieces of clams. Accompanying the soup was a basket of soft, lightly basted bread sticks. Warm from the oven the bread sticks added a nice touch. I suggest you ask for some marinara sauce for dipping, a nice combination that goes well with ice cold beer. When the pizza arrived, the aroma of the Italian seasonings filled the air, creating a delightful anticipation of the first taste. If you are a pizza lover, you know what I am talking about, there is something special about the first bite of a pizza and this one was delicious. What made this pizza special was the fresh basil, the Italian seasonings and the quality of the toppings. Trupiano’s also features a specialty barbecue chicken pizza, comprised of barbecue sauce, mozzarella cheese, barbecue chicken, parsley and red onions. This pizza is enshrined as “A winner at the Las Vegas Pizza Festival International Contest, in 1995. In addition to the pizza, Trupiano’s offers a variety of Italian dishes including 7 antipasti’s such as Calamari Alla Luciana ($9.95), Sautéed baby squid, garlic, white wine, and a spicy tomato sauce and Funghi Imbotti ($8.95) Mushrooms stuffed with onions, pine nuts, dried cranberries, mozzarella and topped with a butter cream sauce. They have lots of pasta dishes and entrees to fill the appetites for those of you looking for traditional Sicilian dished prepared from “Old Family Recipes”.
