Dalton's Roadhouse

775 Center Drive
San Marcos, CA 92069
Driving Directions

For a totally unique and fun dining experience, Dalton’s Steakhouse is a must.

If you enjoy great food, conversation, cold beer and peanuts, you could spend hours in this place. But be forewarned, you will be hooked and return over and over.

The moment you walk inside the experience begins. Near the entrance are cases of peanuts, a hearty bucket of which is brought to your table to enjoy. You crack them and toss the shells on the floor.

Country music playing in the background and a wood interior gives the feeling you are in a ranch house or mountain retreat. Dalton’s is decorated with a wide variety of objects including pictures of movie stars, hubcaps, wagon wheels, barrels, statues of the “Blues Brothers”, an old snow sled, buffalo heads, and antique sign replicas. We loved the ambiance down to the large Corona beer bottles used as salt and pepper shakers.

If you have a favorite margarita, they’ll make it. They have a fully stocked bar. Happy hour is from 3 to 7 and they offer ½ price on selected appetizers and discounted beer.

The appetizers are really good. It appears that every item offered has been well thought out and prepared to make them special. The home made egg rolls are stuffed with cheese and avocado, the unique onion strings are dipped in a batter seasoned with Cajun spices. Both are very tasty. The Buffalo wings are made with the traditional spicy sauce but then a hint of barbecue sauce is added, they were simply delicious. Try the stuffed potato skins, my companion Brenda’s favorite. The Cajun remoulade and basil cilantro sauce were both original and tasty.

Dalton’s is a steak lover’s paradise. I ordered the filet mignon, which arrived at our table piping hot and cooked perfectly. It was melt-in-your-mouth tender and very flavorful. They slow roast their prime rib for hours and the result is a flavorful and tender entree. We also sampled the “Santa Maria” steak, a thinly sliced tri-tip which is slow roasted then finished on the grill with a narrow line of barbecue sauce drizzled on top.

For lunch try their signature Greek Salad, served in a large clear bowl with various lettuce leafs, calamata olives, bits of red bell peppers, red onions, feta cheese, strips of grilled chicken and a light oil and vinegar dressing.

Even though Dalton’s is a steak house, your vegetarian friends will find menu items they can enjoy. Dinners come with a choice of 8 side dishes ranging from fresh Caesar salad to a “maple river yam” plus baked sourdough rolls with garlic butter. Most of their dinner prices are in the 14 to 16 dollar range.

A challenge would be to save room for dessert. How does Grandmas’ Peach Cobbler, Blue Ribbon Brownie, White Chocolate Raspberry Cheesecake, or Texas Apple Jack sound? Or how about a creamy , rich , chocolate milk shake or a smoothie made with strawberries, cream and a dash of orange juice?

This is a restaurant that has a wide selection of dishes and their menu entices you to try them all.

On warmer days, sit outdoors in their spacious patio. If you are planning a party, give them a call and they will cater it with a DJ included. Monday and Tuesday nights a kid can eat free when accompanied by an adult.

One only has to notice the large crowd Dalton’s Steakhouse draws to understand why I recommend this restaurant so highly.
