Churchill's Pub & Grille
IT’S A PUB! First and foremost Churchills on San Marcos Boulevard is a pub. The gracious owner, Ivan Derezin, say’s Churchills is probably in the top five in San Diego County in regards to variety of beer. His “Beer Bottle List” features over 80 beers from 12 countries. Their draught beer is served in a generous 20-ounce glass. I ordered a Boddingtons beer and it arrived at the table very creamy and I waited until the “cascade” cleared before the first sip. The beer is excellent. English beer signs and newspaper articles adorn the walls. They have games such as darts and pool. A cozy outside patio provides lots of privacy. A friendly neighborly environment is encouraged and Ivan is constantly planning various outings. Get on their email list (ivan@churchillspub.us) for a schedule of their upcoming events. You can enjoy a day of pub hopping on a double-decked bus or a beer tasting party featuring imported beers. They also have an Irish Band playing on Saturday nights starting at 9:30. Try their “Churchill Stogie” ($6.95) a thick, foot long 100% Angus beef hot dog served on a freshly made French roll served with light and spicy homemade potato chips. The menu is designed to go perfectly with beer. They have hamburgers, bangers, a French dip, and other sandwiches. Their fish and chips may just be the best in the County; it’s simply delicious. The corn beef and cabbage ($10.95) is excellent. Lean corned beef nicely trimmed and cooked until tender. The USDA Choice Prime Rib is a great choice and quite a bargain for only $14.95. If you like creamy and rich mashed potatoes and gravy you have to give theirs a try, you will be pleasantly surprised. Folks, when in the mood to enjoy a relaxing meal with a delicious imported beer go early. For a festive party atmosphere give them a try on a Saturday night. This is a restaurant I look forward to visiting again. Written by Steve Blair, associated with the restaurant industry for 49 years. “I hang my hat and reputation on this article”. |
