San Marcos Transportation

San Marcos is at the hub of North San Diego County, conveniently situated midway between the coast and the mountains.

Highway 78, North County’s major east-west corridor, runs directly through the city and connects I-15 and I-5. Several well-established bus routes of the North County Transit System “BREEZE” bus system, service the San Marcos area. Special Bus routes can even take riders to such popular venues as the Del Mar Fairgrounds and Racetrack, and San Diego Padres and Chargers games. San Marcos businesses directly benefit from California’s ability to send products to the rapidly expanding economies of the Pacific Rim Basin. Comprehensive rail, airfreight and ocean systems ensure swift, low-cost and efficient access to the marketplace, whether local, state, national or international.

Projected completion in early 2007 will be the North County’s newest public commuter system, the Sprinter Light Rail System, which will run from Oceanside to Escondindo. Years in the planning, NCTD is close to securing total funding for a rail line to serve North County communities. The line, carrying 12,000 passengers a day when it begins service will relieve congestion, particularly on Highway 78, improve air quality and increase mobility for North County residents.
