If you want small town, on the coast, Del Mar is the place. There's one main street, Camino Del Mar, with cottages, homes and condos on both sides. The town rises into the hills and many homes have great views.
If you're looking for new homes, this isn't the place. Over 70% of the homes were built between 1950 and 1980. Only 200 new homes have been built in the last ten years. Del Mar is pretty well built out.
The big draw in Del Mar is the race track. Horses, that is. Summer begins in San Diego County with the annual fair, which draws one million visitors. The fair starts in mid-June and runs through early-July. The Disney web site rates it as the area's single best family event.
Del Mar is a short drive to La Jolla and many residents work at the University of California or are professionals affiliated with firms in La Jolla. If you plan on working in downtown San Diego, take the train. There's a station just south of Del Mar.
The city extends well inland and rises from the Pacific to the hills, which means many homes with spectacular views.

Yes, the City of Del Mar does have a dial-a-ride program available to any Del Mar resident over 62 years of age or temporarily or permanently disabled. Coupon books are used just like cash with participating taxi companies. Coupon books cost $5 per book and residents can purchase up to four books per month.
What happened to train service in Del Mar?
AMTRAK stopped service to Del Mar in February 1995 when Solana Beach was chosen as the site of a new commuter train station.

Who do I call to report that a traffic signal is out?
Call Public Works at (858) 755-3294. Our traffic signals are maintained under contract with Southwest Signal. If it is after hours, contact them directly at (619) 442-3343. Identify yourself as a resident of City of Del Mar with the location of the signal and a description of problem.
When is my street scheduled for sweeping?
Most residential streets are scheduled for sweeping once a month. Signs are located on many streets and a Street Sweeping Schedule is available. You may also contact Public Works at (858) 755-3294.
Why does the street sweeper leave debris on my street?
Del Mar's street sweeper is designed to pick up a majority of debris in the streets. Some pine needles and other small particles are left due to the nature of the equipment.
When was the speed limit changed on Jimmy Durante Boulevard?
The speed limit was changed after the City hired a traffic consultant who recommended that the speed limit be changed from 50 mph to 45 mph to ensure the safety of motorists and pedestrians traveling in the area. As always, please slow for conditions as they warrant. During many events at the Fairgrounds, pedestrian and vehicular traffic are heavy and motorists should drive at an appropriate speed.
How can I get a "STOP" sign installed on my corner?
A written request should be submitted to the Public Works Department, 1050 Camino del Mar, Del Mar, CA 92014. Your request will be forwarded to the Traffic and Parking Advisory Committee for their consideration and they will seek advice from the City of Del Mar’s traffic consultant. Approval by the City Council is also required prior to installation.

I need sand bags; where do I get them?
Under emergency situations, the Public Works Department will provide up to 10 bags and access to sand for Del Mar residents 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and from 12:30 p.m. until 4 p.m. weekdays at the Public Works yard, located at 2240 Jimmy Durante Boulevard. Sand bags are also available at local building and supply stores like Dixieline or The Home Depot. Customers must fill bags with their own labor.
