Del Mar Beaches & Parks

Are open fires allowed on the beach?
No. For safety reasons, Del Mar prohibits open fires and fire rings at the beach. Visitors are welcome to barbeque using charcoal and their own small barbecues.

Is alcohol allowed on the beach?
Alcohol is allowed at the beach, but not in glass containers, throughout the year except the 4th of July and buffer days before and after the holiday.  Each year the City Council decides which specific days to ban alcohol at the beach and in public areas. Please remember that our parks and beaches are for everyone’s enjoyment.  Please consume alcohol responsibly.

What types of events require a facility-use permit?
A facility use permit is required for any reserved use of the parks, beaches, or the Powerhouse Community Center that involves more than 25 individuals or a catered event with less than 25 people. The permit is necessary in order to balance the needs of the general public with those individuals seeking to reserve an area for private use. Please contact the Community Services Department at (858) 755-1556 or stop by Lifeguard Headquarters at 1700 Coast Boulevard for an application.

Lifeguards

How do I become a Del Mar lifeguard?
For information on becoming a lifeguard, please contact Community Services at (858)755-1556.

Do you offer a Junior Lifeguard Program?
The Lifeguard Department offers a large Junior Lifeguard Program for ages 9 to 17. The program is designed to give each participant an opportunity to experience the beaches and ocean in a unique way.  Groups are exposed to activities including water safety, first aid, mock rescues, body surfing, paddling and ocean swimming.  The program is designed to help promote self-esteem, sportsmanship, environmental concerns and a healthy respect and familiarity with the ocean – all of which is important for the Junior Lifeguard interested in working, someday, as a certified Ocean Lifeguard.

For additional information, please contact the Community Services Department at (858)755-1556
